Teaching heating and cooling at a technical school

I teach about heating and cooling systems to students at a local technical college. It’s a job I started almost ten years ago, and I have to say that I love it as much now as I did way back when I first started it all those years ago. I like meeting all of the current people and the current students who come through every session. I find people to be absolutely interesting, and so it’s fun to teach the students and then try to find out what makes them tick. Teaching them new ways of thinking, and all kinds of facts about the heating and cooling system that they are going to be working on is a pleasure for me. Technically, I am just supposed to be teaching them the basics of the HVAC world, but usually I end up going deeper into it just because I enjoy it so much. Teaching heating and cooling wasn’t an intentional career goal; I never thought that it would be something that I would be doing at this point in my life, although I really absolutely enjoy it. It’s empowering to see all of these young people come out of my classes knowing how to do some things that they didn’t know how to do before. One of these days, soon after I retire, I will end up with an HVAC worker I taught. I will love to see the look on their faces whenever they show up at my house to service my furnace or my cooling system!
