He checked out the walk-in closet and said there was an air vent in there, but it wasn’t letting air in. When he opened the air vent, he chuckled. He asked if I had lost anything lately. There was a blouse stuck in the air vent. I remember putting it down there one night because of the air coming through the air vent, and I was afraid it would take the color out of my black dress. He said if I hadn’t put the blouse in the air vent to block the air, I may not have the mold, and I was lucky it hadn’t caused a fire.

When the HVAC technician told me about the air purification system, the only thing I could think of was that it was a new air filter.

He wanted me to install a HEPA air filter instead of the regular air filter I had been using.

I told him that wasn’t what I wanted and asked if I couldn’t just put the HEPA air filter into my furnace and the AC unit. He told me that installing a HEPA air filter wasn’t that easy. Unless you have a newer HVAC system, they didn’t build the older HVAC systems to accept HEPA air filters. The HEPA air filter was thicker and had a heavier weave, which is why they can filter out a lot more dirt, dust, debris, allergens, and other things that get in the air. He said an air filter can capture the mold spores, but they can’t kill them. That’s where the HEPA air filter comes in. They built our HVAC system before people knew about the HEPA air filters. The prices are much higher, and most people don’t want that expense. With an air purification system, you get the HEPA air filter, and an added UV light which will kill all mold spores, mildew and other nasties that could escape into the air. I still wanted to just put a HEPA air filter into my HVAC system, but he wasn’t buying it, and I wasn’t buying his pitch to have an air purification system installed. Maybe I was being stubborn, but I had lived with all the nasties in the air for all these years, and decided an air purification system wasn’t for me.

My husband never told me he had placed an order for an air purification system. We talked about the dust in the air and how our daughter’s asthma seemed to get worse. I knew my house was dusty. We lived in an area where the dirt roads were dirt roads. They didn’t do oil and chips during the spring, and the nearest pavement was three miles away on the state highway. All you had to do was have a light breeze, and the dust was in the house. My problem was that the dust was so bad, it was clinging to itself, and making it look like a mohair blanket on all my cupboards. The grease from cooking caused that mohair blanket to get an oil sheen to it, and I couldn’t clean it. I hired a professional cleaner to get rid of the dirt and dust, but they told me to call the HVAC company. If I had this much dust in the house, there could be a problem with the ductwork or the furnace themselves. I took their advice and called the HVAC company. I told them about the dust and the grease. When the HVAC technician arrived, he said that I needed a hood fan that would pull the grease outside instead of pushing it back into the air. He then checked the ductwork and asked when it had last been cleaned. I couldn’t tell him if the ductwork had ever been cleaned. The next day, I had a team of professional ductwork cleaners cleaning and sanitizing my ductwork. Lucky thing they were there, because they found some holes in the ductwork and could repair them while doing the ductwork cleaning. I still have dust in my house, but it smells cleaner, and the furniture isn’t sporting mohair blankets.

I thought changing an air filter in an HVAC system should be fairly easy.

You open the air filter compartment, take out the old air filter, and put a new air filter inside. Simple? Right? Not for me. I had a hard time getting the air filter compartment open. Once I got it open, the air filter was stuck, and the dust and dirt got all over everything. I tried to vacuum up the mess, but I was afraid it had gotten into the furnace, and I knew some components didn’t handle that very well.
