Changing the color scheme of my whole house

My household is that classic farmhouse. The homeowners before me really leaned into it as well. The outside of the household is yellow with brown trim. The inside is all wood walls, wood ceiling, as well as brown carpet. There is even wallpaper in areas as well as the rugs are yellow checked, then any furniture the previous owner left is an ugly wood, ornate looking thing, then i just hated the entire space. It had potential though. I could see it. I could feel it, however so I contacted an interior design contractor as well as asked for some assistance. I wanted to see if they could make the farmhousehold look disappear. They informed me that it was too strong, and you had all the wood, a farmhousehold sink, as well as the shape of the rooms were in that style. You cannot change how things were built unless you want to demo it. I really didn’t. So I had them make it in a contemporary farmhousehold style. The wood ceiling stayed but the wood walls were painted truly white. The brown rug came up as well as the gray stone went down. No more wallpaper or ugly curtains. The couch is a sleek gray with yellow pillows. I have some truly high quality custom oak furniture that ties in the ceiling as well as with silver knobs that tie in my contemporary style, and finding that right blend was tough. I was really glad a professional was with me every step of the way. I couldn’t have changed the style as easily, cheaply, as well as quickly separate from an interior designer as well as custom furniture builder. They really saved me butt.

Rustic meets traditional

Logical air conditioning strategy will save money

I’ve been living way down south for the better part of five years now.

  • This is actually the fifth summer.

While I’m not exactly a local, I’m definitely not a rookie when it comes to the sort of summer we endure around here. And this year, I’m determined to finally address the exorbitant costs we run up when it comes to cooling our home. I sort of understand the first few summers because it was all so new and all we could do was lean on the air conditioning. But that comes with some serious expense and I’m tired of draining the checking account by over cooling the house. Additionally, when you lean that hard on air conditioning it makes being outside even that much more overwhelming. I find myself just going from air conditioning to air conditioning all summer long to avoid any sort of heat. And that’s really sort of a stupid way to live. For sure, during the peak heating hours of the day, you definitely want to be inside some form of air conditioning. Outside of those hours, I want to be enjoying my life and getting outside for some fresh air. So this year, we’ve all agreed to leave the air conditioning off as long as possible. We’re going to learn to deal with the heat and acclimate to this environment. That way there will be much less demand for air conditioning this summer and that should save us a ton of money. So when the temperatures creep up into the 80’s consistently this spring, we’re not reaching for the thermostat. Instead, we’re leaving windows open and the fans on. Sooner or later, we just have to get with the program.

Sad to see the old heat pump go

I was the kid who would hold elaborate funerals for any of my childhood pets like hamsters, goldfish and gerbils.

It was a whole thing and I would honestly be pretty upset.

That is until I got a replacement. However, when we got our dog, that was a whole different sort of love. I’m thankful that I was out of the central air conditioning and off to college when she died. Strangely, I also feel attached to lots of stuff in my life as well. My husband gives me a hard time about humanizing inanimate objects. Yet, my argument is how can you call something that provides the heating and cooling comfort for your family simply a machine. I fell in love with this house the moment we walked in to it. After we replaced the HVAC equipment and did a few other upgrades, it was the perfect home to raise our family. That HVAC equipment was the first serious investment as a homeowner I had ever made. So I really loved that heat pump because it provided such great quality heating and air in a home I loved. It was almost like that heat pump was sort of like our protector and looked after our family. So when my husband informed me that we were going to have to replace that heat pump, I took it hard. I know it’s stupid but I really did feel like we were losing a member of this household. For sure, I’m enjoying the latest in HVAC technology now that the new HVAC unit has been installed. But I will be forever in debt to that old heat pump for the years of dedicated service.

Rolled the dice on the HVAC unit

On top of that, we can also expect smothering humidity as well.

I’m not a gambler. The one time I went out to Las Vegas, I don’t think I gambled more than maybe twenty bucks. I’d lose five, win seven and then lose four. It was like that and I enjoyed it I suppose. But I would consider what I was doing to really be gambling. Actually, the most fun I had when I was there was just people watching. It’s a scene that’s for sure. When it comes to taking risks, I tend to be very calculated about all that. But when the HVAC technician told me last spring that the heat pump was on its last legs, I learned all about rolling the dice. We always have the HVAC professionals come out to do the air conditioning tune up each spring. I was not at all expecting to hear about the demise of my heat pump though. It caught both my wife and I off guard because we had really not been saving for new residential HVAC. We had the choice of either financing new HVAC equipment or rolling the dice on the old heat pump for one more summer. Where we live, this isn’t just any old summer. From June through September we can expect daily temperatures that hover in the upper 90’s. On top of that, we can also expect smothering humidity as well. Still, we decided to go for it and do the best we could to reduce the load on the heat pump. We had the thermostat set higher than ever before and kept the house as dark as possible to eliminate any kind of sunlight heating. We were really fortunate that the heat pump hung on until October when we had enough money to put in new residential HVAC.

HVAC maintenance is so valuable

I was talking to my neighbor the other day about his HVAC situation.

  • He told me that his heat pump was on its last legs and he was looking at replacing it.

I felt for him because that’s a big chunk of change to have to break off. When we first bought our home, we decided to stick with the HVAC unit that was there. This was all part of the fact that the house was in as is condition and priced to sell quickly. We got so much house for way less money so we were willing to deal with the renovations. Fortunately, the HVAC equipment held out for a couple of years. The residential HVAC upgrade was actually the final renovation. But man, that’s investment of thousand of dollars in HVAC equipment. So we immediately signed up for the HVAC service plan which is focused on HVAC maintenance. It’s been a decade and there hasn’t been even a hint of any sort of heating and cooling problem. But when I asked my neighbor how many years he got out of his HVAC equipment, I was shocked by the answer. He told me that he had installed that heat pump 12 years ago which was right about the time we were buying this house. Yet, he never did any sort of HVAC maintenance of any kind. This was definitely a prime example of why you protect your heating and cooling investment with consistent, seasonal HVAC maintenance. I’m planning on getting at least 25 years or more of uninterrupted quality heating and air from our residential HVAC. And HVAC maintenance is the main reason.

New chapter begins with ductless heat pumps

The decision to leave for the south after retirement was not an easy one.

Leaving the harsh winter weather was the easy part. If I never see a gas furnace again, that’s not going to hurt my feelings. I can also do without snow and ice for the rest of my life as well. I much prefer the very little need for heating that we have now that we live down south. Still, leaving the place where you raised your family isn’t easy. But retiring wasn’t going to be easy for either of us either. Both my wife and I worked really hard inside the commercial HVAC of our businesses for more than 40 years. That’s a long time to commit to the same organizations. On top of that, we really did love and have a passion for our respective careers. The past year has been all about working through the succession plans put in place by the company. We also upgraded the HVAC equipment and the HVAC technology in order to sell the house. The house sold quickly with the latest in residential HVAC helping add such big value. But it was leaving our friends that ended up being so terribly hard. These were people that we raised families with and went through all kinds of good times and tough times. These days, I’m enjoying the heating and cooling comfort produced by our ductless heat pumps in our little retirement home. We chose to go with a multi-split ductless heat pump in order to expedite the renovation process. But it turns out that we love that HVAC technology even more than central air conditioning. And it’s nice when our friends can dial in their own thermostat setting when they come to visit.

Leaving HVAC perfection

These HVAC professionals were so on top of the latest residential HVAC that we knew we were in good hands

There had been some talk of a big change when it came to a poorly performing office in our company. But working inside the zone controlled HVAC of the corporate offices, you hear a lot of things. So when I was called into one of the executive conference rooms, heading up that office was so not on my radar. In fact, I was right where I wanted to be. My husband and I have moved around a lot due to my career. And getting to corporate was what I wanted so we could settle down. We bought a house in a neighborhood we loved and started renovations. We ripped out a great deal of the house as it was really old. The first thing to get done was the residential HVAC. There was no way we could do any of the other stuff without at least having the heating and cooling comfort we’d need. And since we were settling down for the long term, we went with the latest in HVAC equipment and HVAC technology. After spending so many years in apartments or rented homes with inferior HVAC equipment, we wanted to make HVAC a priority. We were able to do that thanks to the great work from our local HVAC company. These HVAC professionals were so on top of the latest residential HVAC that we knew we were in good hands. But just as we finished off all those renovations, I’m being told that I’m the head of that new office. It’s a career maker for sure but I just hate leaving such perfect quality heating and air for starting over again.

Pay attention to the HVAC warranty

When I first got my new HVAC equipment, it was sort of like Christmas for me.

And I wasn’t really listening to the HVAC contractor as he went over the final instructions once the HVAC unit was installed.

Thankfully, my wife was paying attention and she made sure that we took care of everything we needed when it came to the new HVAC unit. The first thing she did was to call and register the warranty with the factory. The HVAC contractor told her that all too often folks forget to register the warranty in the allotted time. With our HVAC equipment, we had to register the warranty within 60 days of installation. But thankfully, my wife also read the HVAC warranty and all the fine print. Of course, I was playing with the smart thermostat and tuning in the zone controlled HVAC. I couldn’t be bothered with something like paying attention to important facts. The fact that my wife read the HVAC warranty ended up saving me from making a huge mistake. I came home this past summer to find the HVAC equipment running, but no cooling air coming from the vents. Instead of immediately calling the HVAC professionals, I decided I’d have a look. I’m so glad that my wife walked in just as I was starting to take the front panel off a piece of the HVAC equipment. She stopped me in my tracks when she told me that if I did anything further, it would void the HVAC warranty. And indeed, that did check me up right fast. Our HVAC warranty clearly stated that nobody but a certified and licensed HVAC technician can work on the HVAC equipment. So once again, my wife being the adult in the family really pays off.
