It can happen that quickly; you get lost and end up dead in one night.

This is what almost happened the other night while doing a little trip to the hot springs on the border of France.

I’ve faced death a few times in life and this one was right there with the other times, but I somehow got out of this one alive too. I am going back to my little town tomorrow but I will remember this fun trip and all of the crazy things that came with it. In just two days I’ll be working at the HVAC business doing my normal heating and cooling equipment repairs and thinking about this trip we just did. I will be taking another trip over the Atlantic Ocean soon and heading for another adventure back in my hometown. My friend is a new contractor back home and was asking me if I could help him do some commercial A/C installations and I told him yes of course I could. I can tell him all about my fun trip to the mountains with my friends and how I almost ended up being a landmark on that mountain for other hikers to take pictures of. I have a new appreciation for heating and fireplaces in homes after being so cold for so long on that mountain that one night. I think next time I go hiking I am going to bring a compass and a tent so if I get lost I can just make a home and sleep for the night. Oh, and I would also bring a gas space heater!

I just wanted a warm fireplace in the cabin with a big comforter wrapped around me.

I just took a trip to the hot springs and we lost our heat on the way here. That was nothing compared to what almost happened on the way back though. I took off early from the hot springs because it was getting dark and the path back was quite treacherous. After about five minutes of walking back I realized I was going the wrong way, so I turned around and went back to meet the group. When I got back though the group was gone and it was just me by myself. My HVAC rep buddy had my phone and that was going to be my light to see, so now I was lost with no light and no phone to call. I kept calm even though I knew I would not survive the sub zero night with no heating device or tent. Luckily, I spotted some lights above me to the left, far above me, and I yelled and whistled and they heard me because the lights were flashing me. I just wanted a warm fireplace in the cabin with a big comforter wrapped around me. So, I ran and caught up with the group and we made it back to safety. I thought about that mountain when I got home and realized if I did get lost, and had no type of furnace or space heating device to keep me warm I would have ended up frozen by the time morning rolled around. It was eight below zero that night I heard on the weather forecast the next morning.

We are now in a car taking a little trip to the thermal baths on the Spanish and French borders.

I think we will be on the road for just an hour and I am going to try and knock out these articles so I can enjoy the view of the mountains on the way back. The local business where I work back home gave me some days off from my duct cleaning job and I am enjoying them to the fullest. Today is our last full day of this trip and it should be a fun one as I have never been to a thermal bath for a swim. I normally swim in the cold sea back home so this will be a welcome change for me. Come Monday I will be back in the heating and cooling corp doing my work once again and remembering this fun trip. It is kind of cool that I can do my side job with these articles and make a bit of money while we are on the road. This world has changed a lot in the past 50 years hasn’t it? You used to have to work at the local business each day and get there by horse and carriage in a vehicle which has no HVAC system. Now I am working in our heated car, traveling at 70 miles per hour, and having fun while making money on the road. The temps are below freezing outside, but with the amazing heater in this car, we are all comfy and happy on our journey.

So, it was inevitable for that malfunction to happen during the pandemic

The pandemic really took a toll on our economy. Many of the small businesses in my area did not survive the lockdown. The pandemic was an unprecedented event that nobody saw coming and some business owners were left to fend for themselves. There was some help from the federal government in the form of a stimulus, but some businesses still suffered grave consequences and had to permanently close their doors. While some businesses did not survive, there were others that thrived and even saw growth during the pandemic. The HVAC industry has been steadily growing over the years, but it did see a significant growth during the lockdowns. With more people working from home, it meant they were using their HVAC units more than before. And as with any equipment, the increased use led to more malfunctions. Not to mention that during quarantine, we experienced some of our warmest months, so a lot of HVAC units broke down during that time. Personally, I have an older HVAC unit, and sure enough, it broke down about 2 months after I began to work from home. The capacitor, which is an electrical component responsible for starting the HVAC unit, malfunctioned. Prior to that incident, I had never had an issue with my unit. Turns out that the capacitor is sensitive to heat and will fail from direct sunlight and if the unit is running too hard. So, it was inevitable for that malfunction to happen during the pandemic. Therefore, if my unit broke there were tons of other units that experienced issues during that time. This means business increased for HVAC companies all over the country.

I grew up in the northern part of the country where the temperature gets pretty cold during the Winter months.

And when I was a child, our house was always warm and toasty in the colder season.

We used a radiator that was connected to a boiler as our heat source during the Winter. Unfortunately, the house that we lived in did not have central heating or cooling. In fact, most houses and buildings in the city did not have central heating or cooling equipment. When the houses and buildings were constructed, central HVAC was not a common equipment placed inside those homes. So, in addition to the radiator that we used for heat in the Winter, we had window air conditioners that we used to keep cool during the Summer months. Back then, life was much simpler, and I was grateful that my house had heat as well as A/C. I have since moved out of that city, so I have been using a central HVAC unit ever since. And of course, it’s a luxury to have cooling and heating equipment in my home. For many of those residents that still live in the city that I grew up in, they don’t have the same luxuries. In fact, unless the building or home is a newly built structure, chances are, the residents are still relying on a radiator for heat and a window A/C for cooling in the Summer. When you live in the city, you get used to those options, as it wasn’t until I moved out, I realized how much more comfort an HVAC unit provides for a home.

With Christmas around the corner, I am getting excited for the season.

• Every year, my parents host dinner at their home.

This means, all my brothers and sisters as well as their kids will gather to celebrate the holiday. There will be over 10 people in the house, and it will be noisy and chaotic, but my parents absolutely love it. They love having their grandkids running throughout the house on Christmas morning and they love it when we light the fireplace and sit around it while we watch the kids open their gifts. Sitting by the fireplace has become a yearly tradition for us, and it is something that we all look forward to. I enjoy hearing the crackling of the flames and I love the warm and cozy feeling I get while sitting in front of it. It’s a wood burning fireplace, so my brothers and father make sure that it is clean before they light it. And honestly, my parents barely use the fireplace when they are home. They use it twice per year, once for Thanksgiving and the other for Christmas. So, the fireplace isn’t filthy or filled with soot or buildup, but they like to be safe and will clean it out before and after each use. They also check the chimney as well as the cap to make sure neither of them have any damages. Once they are done checking they will light the fireplace so that we can enjoy it. While the fireplace adds ambiance to the home, it is also a source for heat. When we have it lit, we always adjust the temperature on the thermostat. I am looking forward to sitting around the fireplace again this year.

With the rising cost of everything, I have decided to conserve energy in my home so that I could save some money.

My plan is to use a space heater instead of using my central heating.

I must admit that I am a bit wary about using a space heater because it does have a bad reputation for causing fires. Of course, a lot of times, those fires are perhaps due to negligence or misuse of the heater but that doesn’t stop me from being concerned about them. Modern space heaters should be used as a supplement to central heating and not as a main source of heat. But many people use them as a primary way to heat their homes. I understand why because it costs a lot more money to heat our homes in the Winter months. There are two types of space heaters: a kerosene and electric heaters. Kerosene heaters are a bit more dangerous and tend to be the cause of most of the space heater related fires. However, if a space heater is used properly, there should be little to no issues. For instance, you should never leave a space heater unattended, and you should always keep it in an open area away from furniture or anything hanging like curtains. Although a kerosene heater has the capability of heating a house because it can produce up to 20,000 BTU of heat, it is not recommended to use the heater as a main heating source. Personally, I will be using an electric space heater, because the thought of having a kerosene burning equipment in my home does not sound like a good idea to me.

Did you know that in 2023 the price of all HVAC units as well as parts will increase? This increase is due to the new regulations that the new administration has placed on HVAC manufacturers.

In an effort to help the environment, the administration passed a bill that has increased the SEER rating for all new HVAC units. newly, the rating is 14, but it will be increased to 15 which means that the HVAC manufacturers will need to adjust their prototype and that will incur more cost for them. Of course, that cost will be passed down to the HVAC provider and then ultimately to the consumer. Although the new HVAC units will be more expensive, the good news is, in the long run, they will conserve energy and save homeowners money on their energy bills. Additionally, the more efficient units will create more comfort indoors and it will also create less pollution for the environment. This new policy only applies for newly purchased HVAC units. If a homeowner has an older unit, they do not need to replace the unit, however, as the older units are phased out, it will become hard to find parts for them. This means that service can be delayed due to shortage of parts to fix older units. So, although homeowners are not required to replace their older units, eventually, they will have no choice but to because of the new policy. My HVAC unit is only 5 years old, and I am hoping that I won’t have to replace it for another 5 or more years.
