I have many acquaintances and plenty of friends.

• But the really close friends I have are few and precious to me.

My buddy Steve is one of those people. Steve really is a great person on every level. There are people out there who see Steve coming and try to take advantage. We’ve been friends since meeting in a commercial HVAC of the office many years ago. He was actually one of the first people in our company to work remotely so he didn’t come into the commercial HVAC every day. So when he did show up at work, I loved to spend time with him. He’s so knowledgeable in our industry and also so willing to help others understand the finer points of what we do. This guy really works to try to help everybody be better at their jobs. And he does it because he cares. We hang out together outside of work and have gotten really close over the years. He even invited me out to his cabin which is something that’s pretty rare. He lives way out on some property and just barely still on the electrical grid. The heating in his house comes from a wood stove and until recently there was no other a residential HVAC. Steve is super technical and can put together or install just about anything. He ended up buying a pair of ductless heat pumps to go in his cabin. Not so much for the heating during the winter but for the air conditioning in the summer. So I went with him for a long weekend and we were able to install the ductless heat pumps ourselves. I have to say that I was really amazed with the sort of quality heating and air that comes with the ductless heat pumps.

And that pretty much ended her visit.

I wish I was a bit better about controlling my emotions at times. Yet, I tend to get pretty defensive when I perceive disrespect when it comes to me or my family. Apparently, this goes for the family home and my HVAC unit as well. It took us a long time, but my wife and I decided it was best to put the family home up for sale. The real estate market was just on fire and we couldn’t pass it up. Considering that we had been talking about selling the home for years, this seems like just the right time. We called the realtor that was recommended to us to come out and list our house. She barely even said hello before she started ripping into our place. Like I said, I can be a bit sensitive do any sort of attack or insult on anything I love. And I really got upset the longer she critiqued are home. And when she got to a HVAC equipment I pushed back. As long as I’ve had this HVAC equipment, I invested in plenty of HVAC maintenance every single year. The residential HVAC wasn’t even 15 years old at the time. So there was plenty of life left. I got actually pretty angry at the suggestion that we had to replace the HVAC unit. And that pretty much ended her visit. The next time she came back she was much more respectful and she brought along data from comps in our area that proved her point. See also informed me of a program with the local HVAC company that would recycle my HVAC equipment. It would go to people or organizations that needed better HVAC equipment but couldn’t afford it.

When you grow up down here, HVAC cooling is just part of the picture.

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t able to count on air conditioning during our brutal heat and humidity of summer.

Of course, we had heat pump to provide it all the central air conditioning in our home. My dad was particularly proud to always have the latest when it came to residential HVAC. To this day, he’s proud of his residential HVAC even though he lives in a little condo. Of course, he has the latest in ductless heat pumps where he lives now. Those ductless heat pumps really get the job done when it comes to cooling off his place. We were sitting around in that great HVAC cooling not too long ago having a laugh about how his father was. Grandpa would come to stay with us when I was little and he had a million stories. Grandpa was one of the most entertaining people you could ever be around. My dad would even listening to some of the stuff that old man was saying. One thing my dad confirmed as true with the fact that my grandfather never had central air conditioning. In fact I don’t think he had residential HVAC until he was in his 70s. But my grandpa grew up on a farm and was used to scheduling his life around the heat and humidity of summer. I can still remember him preferring to go out on the porch to catch a breeze in the shade than sit inside the central air conditioning of my dad’s house.

I haven’t actually asked her but I imagine that my wife would still shake her head about how stubborn I was about an HVAC upgrade.

I was just plain dumb when it came to what a difference air purification would make in our lives.

Actually, I’m sort of surprised she doesn’t hammer me daily on that one. Yet, I just wasn’t wild about spending thousands of dollars on a whole home air purification system. Air purification does much more than simply get rid of indoor air problems. What ultimately got me behind the decision to install a whole home air purification system was getting educated. Initially, we started talking about air purification in order to get rid of an indoor air problem. Both my wife and I had tried every sort of solution when it came to making the house smell better. We got a few moments of masking the odors but that was about it. We found out about the whole home air purification system during a dinner party at a friend’s. But the steep cost of that air purifier made me pump the brakes. This sort of air purifier fits inside the HVAC equipment and treats the air as it comes from the HVAC return. I just didn’t want to spend that much money and that’s all there is to it. But after the pandemic hit, I learned just how important indoor air quality is to our health. That made it much more palatable to spend the money on the whole home air purification system. We now have zero indoor air odors and our house smells fantastic. Plus we have the best indoor air quality money can buy.

I’m so fortunate to be able to own a pretty big chunk of property.

Having grown up in apartments in the city with radiant heating and zero air conditioning, this was always my dream.

But I never thought I’d have this much space. I’m able to move around without having to accommodate neighbors or other people I don’t know. It’s such a wonderful situation for me. But having a nice house with great residential HVAC can still be plenty of work. There’s not a lot of time for sitting in the recliner enjoying the HVAC cooling. Although these days, I most definitely make time to catch my breath in the air conditioning. I have plenty to keep me going. Just mowing the lawn and keeping up the property is plenty to keep me busy. So I’m acting like a farmer these days and getting up at first crack of sunrise. But by 10 in the morning, I can be pretty worn out. So I do get inside the air conditioning to cool off and hydrate. It took me this long in life to really understand how important hydration is. So taking these breaks inside the HVAC cooling and getting my water is important. And speaking of moisture, the heat pump takes care of the moisture level in my house. That’s right the heat pump, is doing more than just providing the HVAC cooling I love. The air conditioning process is also balancing the humidity level at the same time. That versatile heat pump is doing so much for us and we don’t even realize. Without that air conditioning process, I’d have a whole lot of mold and mildew to clean. And like I said, I have plenty to keep me busy.

The older I get, the more I see things coming sort of full circle when it comes to life.

• There seems like just one big circle cycling through my life.

So many old things are suddenly new again. This is particularly true when it comes to our HVAC heating method. Recently, we just built a new house that has one floor and just two bedrooms. We’re in our early 70 so it’s time to simplify as much as we can. Our new home was a custom job that we helped design. And we chose a geothermal heat pump for our heating and cooling needs. This type of HVAC equipment actually uses the near constant temperature of the earth in order to extract energy for heating and cooling. It’s pretty fascinating as far as a heating and cooling unit goes. The other nice thing is that it lasts for nearly 40 years. So this heat pump will be the last one we have to put in. My wife and I also like the sustainability aspect as it’s just about the most efficient residential HVAC. However, it’s the HVAC heating that really blows my mind. With the geo heat pump, heating energy is transferred through radiant floor heating. That comes from copper pipes underneath the flooring. It takes me back to when I was a little boy and would visit my grandparents. They had a giant boiler in the basement that provided radiant heating throughout the house. It was the coziest heating I’ve ever experienced. And now all these years later, I’m experiencing that sort of cozy radiant heating once again. Like I said, it just seems like circles over and over in my life.

The idea that I’d finally fall in love and get married seemed unlikely at best.

When I told my mom, I was afraid it my shock her too much as she’s now near 80.

I’m in my early fifties and finally taking the plunge. There was plenty of shock from my colleagues inside the commercial HVAC of the office as well. Nobody ever thought I would finally get married. I’m not sure exactly why that is given that I have had pretty serious girlfriends. I never really felt close enough to any of them to consider marriage. But then I met that person and getting married seemed like the most natural thing to do. We happened to be the same age and actually met a long time ago. We worked for rival companies and would enjoy the same commercial HVAC of conferences now and again. It’s not that we were colleagues sharing the same HVAC in the office but we knew each other from business. We also attended some of the same social events. However, over all these years, we didn’t get close until recently. And now we’re buying a house together and choosing new residential HVAC. It’s really cool to be able to be a first time married guy in a new place. The new HVAC equipment is putting out just the best quality heating and air we could have ever asked for. And living with my wife has also seemed like the most natural thing to do. We both even have the same sort of heating and cooling needs. So there is no fighting or need for compromise when it comes to the HVAC thermostat setting.

For me, less is more when it comes to all the technology stuff in my life.

• I’m thankful for many aspects of technology but it can also just be a bit overwhelming.

For sure, technology makes my life much more convenient. Yet, I’m still a bit cautious when it comes to technology as it applies to all the things in my life. I’d like to still count on my own mind when I can. And I also don’t really need every doggone tech gadget. It has something to do with the fact that it took me this long to get a smart thermostat. If it had been up to my wife, we would have had a smart thermostat long ago. Actually though, we were both waiting on that initial HVAC technology to be refined. Neither one of us wanted to spend a bunch of money on a smart thermostat only to have it be obsolete the next year. So we did wait and I continued to be the one on thermostat patrol. But recently, we took the plunge and called the HVAC company to send out an HVAC technician to install a smart thermostat. I just wish I knew then what I know now when it comes to this sort of HVAC technology. I would have done this far sooner. The HVAC technician gave the smart thermostat basic parameters. From there, it’s been basically on its own. I just let the smart thermostat do its thing and we saved more than 15% on HVAC cooling this summer. Obviously, the smart thermostat does a much better job of maintaining thermostat discipline than I do. And it’s actually a piece of technology that I can appreciate without it being in my face.

Having just moved to town, I bought a condo that had old central air conditioning.

My dad raised me by himself as my mom passed away when I was just a baby. We had a great house with some first rate residential HVAC as well. I sort of turned to my dad for just about everything. When it came to falling in love, I looked to him as well. Dad always told me that I would know when it was real and he sure was right. Dad also encouraged me to embrace the differences in someone that I fell in love with. So I think it’s pretty ironic that I’ve fallen deeply in love with an HVAC professional. I’ve said this in front of people who don’t know us and have gotten some quizzical looks. But the fact is, my wife is the owner of a local HVAC company. She became an HVAC technician once she quit college and learned she had a passion for heating and cooling. Within ten years, she had gone out on her own and started her own heating and cooling company. She’s a remarkable person and I’m lucky to have met her. We actually met because of an HVAC issue. Having just moved to town, I bought a condo that had old central air conditioning. So I made an appointment with the HVAC contractor expecting to meet a man. But instead I got to meet my wife who is also the best HVAC contractor I’ve ever met. Dad was right, I knew it was right falling in love with an HVAC professional from the very beginning.

For sure, there is really only one life we have to live.

And to take that thought a bit further, each moment is really all that all of us have. It’s sort of a new mantra for my life. Honestly, for the first time in our life I am coming to understand just what having 1 life to live particularly means to me. I suppose really working inside the commercial Heating plus Air Conditioning of our valuable office so often stole some of my perspective. I am not going to get it into regrets about our choices. But for me, I would get enough of that sort of life. By the time I was in our mid fifties, I had the corner office with our own personal thermostat. This was really something for me and I had worked hard to attain such a level. And having our own Heating plus Air Conditioning thermostat was pretty valuable. But looking at it now, it all seems so empty. All that work, energy and sacrifice to just have more stuff and even better Heating plus Air Conditioning in our office seemed empty. When it comes to the humdrum nature of life, I can always count on our husband Max to keep things exciting.

Is just so much the morning to morning stuff that all of us all have to deal with so why not make it interesting.

This is the way Max looks at life in order to not get too drastic about it. I’d rather be out there in life than inside the air conditioner worrying about it. So embracing the challenge in a fun way is something that all of us both suppose wonderful about. This past Spring, Max and I decided to commit to challenge each other when it came to saving on the Heating plus Air Conditioning cooling.
