I have this innate dislike of anyone who tries to act like a friend or family the first time we meet them.

Last week, I had the HVAC company send a technician to the house to check the furnace.

My husband wasn’t yet home when the HVAC technician arrived. He was overly friendly, and I was quite uncomfortable. By the time my husband got home, I was ready to toss him out on his ear. My husband walked in and asked if he had repaired the furnace yet. The young man shook his hand and said he was just getting ready to go to the basement. Once he was done telling us about the repairs he made and how much it was going to cost, I wasn’t as upset with him. He was actually quite a nice kid, and I realized he was talking to me like I was his grandmother and not just a customer. My husband asked him why he became an HVAC technician, and they chatted out by the service van for a while. After the young HVAC technician pulled out, my husband told me he had recently lost his grandparents when their furnace broke, and the house filled with carbon monoxide. He became an HVAC technician so he could do his part to make sure no other grandparent would ever die of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Normally, mom doesn’t mind storms, but now that she is getting older, everything bothers her.

Last week, she called me and begged me to come to the house.

A storm had gone through that left her in the dark with no heat. The furnace quit working when the power went off. She was afraid of the dark, and she was cold, so I went to pick her up. I brought her to the house, where we had power. Not that the storm did not affect us, but we had a generator, so we didn’t lose power. We had lights and our furnace was still working. Mom moved into the spare room until the storm blew over and the power was back on. We knew it was no longer safe for her to live alone when a simple power outage had her this frazzled. I tried to talk her into moving in with us, but she was having none of it. She said that once the power came on and she had her furnace running again, she would be okay, but I doubted it. My daughter went into my mom’s room and sat down on the bed to read to her. She told mom she didn’t like it when the lights went out, and how nice it was when mommy and daddy had the generator installed. She can stay warm when the lights go out because the furnace still works, and she can also see to read. I think my daughter was convincing mom to live with us, even if I couldn’t.

If I had known how much the HOA was going to interfere in the ownership of my house, I would not have bought this house. Not only does the HOA feel they should be able to tell us what to do with the house, but they also charge us dues to live here, but they won’t share the mortgage. This doesn’t seem to be fair to me. My sister and I were thinking about beautifying our lawn. They wanted to know what plants we could put in and told us we could purchase one tree, and it had to be an evergreen. When they weren’t on the property, we bought whatever plants we wanted and bought a magnolia tree. I also painted the air conditioning unit blue. That caused more furor than the plants and trees. The president of the HOA told us we had no right to paint the AC unit. He and his cronies told us it was written in the handbook that we could not touch the air conditioning unit, unless it was to have it replaced. I don’t think the HOA was ready for my sister and I. We told them we paid for the air conditioning unit and the house, and if they didn’t like our new blue air conditioning unit or our plants, they could evict us. Instead, they took us to court, and we sold the house and moved. We didn’t want to be under anyone’s rule, except our own. Our air conditioning unit and furnace belong to us and we are free to do what we want with our home and property.
