This year we had an exceptionally cold winter and spring

And throughout the spring season, temperatures hovered in the 40s and 50s with some nights dipping into the high 20s with light snowfall

I wasn’t focused at all on the weather when I was young and in college. I didn’t really care if there were hurricanes poised to hit my area or if we were going to have freezing temperatures overnight and into the following morning. Whenever I wasn’t at home letting my parents worry about these things, I was safe in my dorm room at school letting the college administrators worry about them. Hurricane Sandy came and went during this time, and I only vaguely remember some tropical storm strength weather before the storm headed northward toward New York, New Jersey, and New England. I had a friend living in Brooklyn at the time and he told me that the bottom levels of his apartment building flooded from storm surge. They had to shelter in place for two days until the water levels receded enough where they could get out safely and get to a shelter. These days I’m constantly checking my weather app, especially during severe storm season. It’s not just hurricanes and tropical storms, we will get a storm cell off the ocean that picks up serious strength from the warm water before blasting us with wind and rain when it comes ashore. These storms will often yield tornadoes and waterspouts. While we experienced the start of storm season, we were still experiencing winter weather in early spring. And throughout the spring season, temperatures hovered in the 40s and 50s with some nights dipping into the high 20s with light snowfall. I had to use the heating system more this year than in any of the prior four years living in this house.

My house is cooler and my energy bill is down after installing a new a/c system

The old air conditioner was rapidly losing its efficiency and needed to be swapped out before I got in trouble from my home insurance company.

Handling money got a little easier for me after I bought a marker board for my house to list all of my rolling expenses each month in addition to any sudden or one-time expenses. For instance, I had to replace an old and faulty shower head for my bathroom and had that expense on my board for a month before I could budget the money to buy a new one. I’ll put my food expenses and gasoline expenses on the board as well. Since I’m such a visual person, these visual aids help me organize my mind as well as my life. It’s easy to make lists for upcoming appointments or products in the house that will require replacements sooner or later. All of this has resulted in money savings every time I visit the grocery store or supercenter. One other thing I did recently to get my monthly expenses down was install a brand new a/c system inside. The old air conditioner was rapidly losing its efficiency and needed to be swapped out before I got in trouble from my home insurance company. After the new air conditioner was installed, I was amazed to see my energy bill drop immediately. The new air conditioner resulted in an immediate 30% savings on my electricity bill every single month. This gives me more money for food and other essentials! I’m not nearly as worried each month because it no longer feels like I’m constantly living paycheck to paycheck like before. Becoming financially stable isn’t easy, but the hard work is worth the effort.

You can’t afford to neglect furnace maintenance and care, especially with fuel systems

I had an old used car in high school and college that only survived as long as it did because I was diligent about the maintenance and care.

That meant taking it in for oil changes and liquid top-offs.

Usually the mechanic would do a quick inspection as well to see if there was anything obvious that needed to be fixed. As long as I was smart about staying up to date on these details, my car would stay on the road with fewer issues overall. The car was given to me by my step dad and I took that situation extremely seriously, especially whenever I had repairs done to the engine for any reason. My time with this old car was instructive for me as I progressed in life. You have a lot of responsibilities where you have the lives others are put in your hands if you’re a parent or a caregiver, so why would you be careless with your expensive equipment like vehicle, appliances, and the rest? My gas furnace is a good example of this concept playing out in real time each year. I can’t afford to let the service and maintenance of my HVAC equipment falter or I will freeze to death in our near subarctic winter weather. It’s the end of April and we just had what I hope is our last snowfall of the year until October rolls around again. Furnace care is even more important with fuel systems like gas because a poorly working furnace could result in toxic gas exposure to you and your family.

How he is getting into real estate

My husband just read Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The Millionaire next door… Now he is all about real estate.

Now if you want to make a lot of money and keep it long term, you need to invest, but one of the easiest plus most consistent things to invest in is properties, actually rentals. My husband is constantly on the cell with a real estate agent talking about upcoming apartments for rent, real estate investing is all he wants to talk about in the evenings. He is all about getting a new apartment, renting it out plus then using that cash to buy the next one. I read the books too, so I see what his plan is. The snag is that my husband isn’t really nice at real estate. He doesn’t like to spend my savings at all. The real estate broker will send him properties plus frequently my husband will come up with a reason why he won’t buy them. One locale he lost because he miserable the seller of the condo so much. He kept offering super low amounts for their house. He’s upsetting the real estate agents by trying to make offers on the sly separate from them. I told my husband he really doesn’t have what it takes to go into real estate. I have thought about doing it. I want to have a steady income for the rest of my life. I have the cash to invest. I would want to hire out a property management service though. I wouldn’t want to deal with renters calling me afternoon in plus afternoon out. I don’t want to mow lawns, fix shower drains and listen to their issues either.

Cleaning before my in-laws

My in-laws then come to a freshly clean, well smelling house

I work an office job out in the city, but my technical prowess are limited! When I get back home I don’t have a lot of energy. My hubby and I do a lot of take out or frozen meals, the two of us watch whatever is on TV and wait for the weekends; I can’t undoubtedly clean a home like a proper homeowner. I wash bathrooms, mop the floors and dust when I can, but it isn’t frequent. When our in-laws come for a visit it is constantly stressful. My mother in law is absolutely OCD about cleaning and germs, but her home looks like a nurse’s office. It is so fresh. When I suppose they are coming I just hire out a cleaning business. I have a cleaning service that does carpet cleaning, brick and grout cleaning, power washing and dryer vent cleaning. They handle all the things that get horrible overtime when I don’t keep up with them. That way I only need to do a bare bones wash job and cleaning job on the surfaces. My in-laws then come to a freshly clean, well smelling house. I love having a reason once a year to get those things scrubbed. The grout constantly gets a little gray, the outside of the home gets webs and our carpets start to think gross, however basically when I start noticing them is when our in-laws call for a visit, and so it all works out in the end. What is fantastic is that the cleaning service never takes that long.

Trying to improve hydration habits

I have trouble drinking the recommended amount of water per day.

  • I blame my poor hydration habits on hard water while I was growing up.

My family had well water that was orange in color and tasted and smelled terrible. Way back then, bottled water wasn’t common or popular. My mother never would have purchased something that was available for free from the tap. I never got accustomed to drinking water throughout the day. I am not a fan of the taste, and I rarely recognize that I feel thirsty. I frequently suffer the symptoms of dehydration. I get such severe headaches that I need to lie down. I deal with chills, fever and nausea. Several times I have thrown up or passed out. As I’ve gotten older, the consequences of insufficient water intake have become more severe. I make an effort to carry a water bottle around with me but forget to sip out of it. I’ve needed to make good hydration habits part of my daily exercise program. I workout every morning for approximately an hour. I incorporate all different types of high intensity cardio, stretching and strength training into the regimen. I listen to music the whole time and typically change up the exercise at the end of each song from my playlist. I now make myself take a drink of water between every song. I drink at least one full 16-ounce bottle of water during the workout. I have also purchased a specialized hydration power that I mix into a water bottle to consume at the conclusion of the workout. Even if I forget to take another sip of water all day, at least I got a good start to the day.

Happy with my elliptical

After considering all different types of machines, I chose an elliptical for my home gym.

There are very good reasons why this kind of equipment has gained popularity in the last few years.

Compared to other machines, an elliptical doesn’t take up any extra space. The operation is virtually silent, allowing me to workout at all hours of the day or night without bothering family members. The machine includes a convenient cup holder and spot to put my phone and bluetooth speaker. It features a very large touchscreen display that is easy to navigate. I can set the parameters of my workout according to duration, distance or calories burned. I can choose from a wide variety of preset programs in a wide variety of locations or watch television or a movie while I workout. I like that the elliptical avoids stress on my joints. Unlike running or jumping rope, there is no hard impact causing damage to my hips, knees, ankles or feet. My feet never lift off the pedals. The gliding motion is wonderfully smooth and beneficial. Plus, an elliptical is one of the few machines able to work both arms and legs. I have handles that I can pull on while simultaneously moving my feet. I can easily add resistance to increase the demands and calorie burn of the workout. I always get my heart pumping and lungs expanding and end up drenched with sweat by the end of the session. While the elliptical I chose was quite expensive, I am totally satisfied with the purchase. I feel it was far more worthwhile than buying a treadmill or stationary bike.

Husband doesn’t take care of himself

I worry about my husband’s health and future quality of life. He and I are the same age. We met and started dating in high school and have been married for thirty-five years. I have always been involved in sports and made fitness a priority. I workout every single day for at least an hour. My training sessions include approximately 30 to 40 minutes of high intensity cardio exercise. I vary between running, cycling, jumping rope, swimming and kayaking. I am conscientious about always beginning with a dedicated warm up. I take the time to stretch all of my muscles and actively work on my flexibility, balance and range of motion. During every workout, I target strength training. I might do a series of lunges, squats and push-ups or lift hand weights or kettlebells. I have an incline bench that allows me to really concentrate on abdominal muscles. I have a mini trampoline that is both fun and beneficial to burning calories, elevating my heart rate and getting lungs working at maximum capacity. Along with a dedicated exercise regiment, I am conscientious about drinking enough water and getting plenty of sleep. I don’t drink alcohol, smoke tobacco or take any kind of medication. I don’t eat fast food. I am a vegetarian and invest heavily into top quality skin and hair care products. My husband never exercises, drinks lots of coffee and smokes cigarettes. He tends to sleep odd hours and eats a lot of pizza, burgers and steak. He complains about painful joints, headaches, stomach issues and a sore back. I’ve tried to convince him to take better care of himself, but he won’t listen.

Choosing a stationary bike

When I decided to spend the money on a larger piece of workout equipment, I devoted a lot of time to research. I have limited space available in my home gym. I don’t have an unlimited budget to spend on exercise equipment. I was worried about investing into a machine that I would never use and might come to regret. Initially, I intended to purchase a treadmill. However, the hard impact on the joints of the hips, knees and feet can become a problem. I already do a lot of running and jumping rope. I needed a way to rest my body while still burning a lot of calories and elevating my heart rate. I then considered ellipticals. This type of machine engages both arms and legs and requires no jarring impact. The feet never lift off the pedals. I ended up choosing a stationary bike because of the size and price of the machine. The bike is wonderfully quiet, allowing me to workout when my family is sleeping or watching television. It features a very comfortable seat, cup holder and built-in fan to cool me down. There is a touchscreen display that allows me to adjust resistance and set goals. I can target my workout toward distance, time or calories burned. The machine keeps track of my workouts so that I can compete against my personal best. It also offers all different types of programs. I like that I can listen to music and read a book while I’m exercising. Riding the bike is so enjoyable that it feels like I’m being lazy. However, I make sure to push myself to pedal faster and burn as many calories as possible. When I get off the bike, I can feel the effort in my thighs and calves.

I want a treadmill

For my home gym, I’ve invested into the most basic equipment.

I have been unwilling to spend a lot of money on workout gear.

I have a yoga mat, jump rope, set of free weights and an incline bench. I get creative with the types of workouts I do. I include all different types of lunges, squats, push-ups, ab crunches and static holds. I’ve gotten really skilled at jumping rope. I go through a variety of weight-lifting techniques to target all different areas of the arms, shoulders and back. When the weather cooperates, I might go for a run or a bike ride. Just recently, I visited my son for a long weekend. I stayed at his house and had a wonderful time. My son spent a small fortune on a recent innovation in treadmills. The machine is not powered by electricity but by the movement of the feet. It has a curved track and operates almost silently. A longer stride causes the track to speed up while a shorter stride does the opposite. The machine has no top speed. It took some getting used to, but I absolutely loved running on that treadmill. Once I got on it and got going, I didn’t want to get off. I ended up running for over an hour and burning a tremendous amount of calories. Although the machine is rather large and expensive, I want one. I saw how beneficial it can be to have access to a machine that provides high intensity cardio exercise. The treadmill is perfect for days when I feel lazy or when there’s inclement weather.

Weather sometimes affects workouts

I live just far enough south that I no longer deal with sub-zero temperatures or snow.

For most of the year, the weather in my local area is just perfect.

My husband and I leave the doors and windows open to enjoy the fresh breeze. We can step outside in shorts and a T-shirt and not need a jacket. I love that I can most often go for a run or ride my bike for a workout. After living in the northern part of the country for over fifty years, I appreciate the ability to exercise outside. I am rarely forced inside due to cold temperatures, rain, snow or excess humidity. I have a lanai built across the back of my house that provides the ideal workout space. Because of a wall constructed of screens, this section is not temperature controlled. The influx of fresh air is typically a benefit. In the middle of the winter, the conditions can become rather chilly. I need to bundle up in layers of clothes and hold off on my workout until the heat of the day. It’s difficult to warm up my muscles and loosen up my joints. I worry about injury. Occasionally, the weather is so cold that I need to exercise inside the house. I don’t have a lot of space, which makes for a disappointing workout. During the peak of the summer heat and humidity, the lanai becomes overheated and sticky. I plug in a box fan, adjust it to the highest speed and stand right in front of it. I am still dripping sweat before I complete my warmup. It is difficult to get motivated and push myself when I feel sluggish.

Looking at the stars at night can get cold really quickly

My son has been bugging me through most of the Winter asking when all of us were going to go out to watch the stars with the telescope, but we did try going out there in the Winter season.

However, it was so chilly and I couldn’t wait to get back inside with the comfort from the gas furnace and the fireplace.

He seemed to be alright out there so long as he was wearing multiple layers, then I just felt so frosty though and it was difficult for me to deal with. Lately, all of us were able to get out a few times to watch the stars, and some of the days were still a bit too frosty for our taste, then our partner got me something really nice, a pair of gas furnace inserts for our coat, now I am able to charge these heating systems and set the temperature control settings how I want… She got some for our son too so he can be just as warm as me when all of us are out there checking out the strange stars and the craters on the moon. Honestly, I wish all of us would have gotten these gas furnace inserts back when our son was bugging me about going out in the Winter weeks; but at least when all of us did go out in the Winter, I would have been so much more comfortable! Our son is already looking forward to the warmer weeks, however he also looks forward to next Winter so all of us can watch the stars while utilizing the gas furnace inserts. He says the skies are usually brighter while in the Winters. I’m not sure if that’s true, however there were some undoubtedly clear days this past Winter.
