My sister has lived out of neighborhood for most of her adult life. She married the ‘boy next door’, they bought a home, plus had two daughters. Naturally, in order to see my extended family, it meant that I would need to travel there or they would need to travel here. So we’ve done it both ways. Most of the trips are made during university holidays for the sake of her children, and for the sake of my vacation schedule. During the Summer vacation, they always come north to my home. Their summers in the south are sweltering. And even though our northern summers seem hot enough for our liking, they all know that our climate is cool! Our home has central air conditioning, and ceiling fans. I’ve noticed that once our house has four more bodies in it, the air conditioning plus ceiling fans are running much more steadily than normal. I got to thinking about the reason for this. Once I googled the question ‘how much heat does one human body emit?’, I ended up reading about Btu’s plus what that means for central air conditioning. One Heating plus A/C website stated that “on average, a sedentary person will add 500 Btu’s per hour to a home, whether it’s hot or chilly outside”. In addition, if people are using PCs, lights, etc., there are extra Btu’s to consider. I’m no Scrooge, although I am careful of how my money is being spent – or wasted. In the end, I decided to adjust my temperature control by one degree – warmer, that is. I figured that these southerners were used to the heat anyway!

But when my friend and I arrive home, the bedrooms are significantly cooler in the winter season plus warmer in the Summer than the rest of the house. I remember when my friend and I had the home built, the builder discussed that the sitement of the heating/cooling unit in the basement would determine its efficiency in reaching each of the rooms of the house. We discussed the pros plus cons of placing the units closer to the main living section of the home. Bedrooms, he explained, are respectfully not as important, as ceiling fans in the Summer plus blankets in the winter season will compensate for any inefficiency. I now wonder if my friend and I let him talk us into a poor decision. I even called another HVAC company to discuss the situation, he explained that the ideal location of the heater/cooling system unit is one where there is a supply of natural gas, an exhaust vent, plus fresh air circulation. His explanation made much more sense than that of the original builder.

Four years ago, I made an acquaintance with Shary; Shary had been volunteering and fostering pets and cats for our local rescue organization for fifteen years; A single lady for most of her adult life, she lived on a limited income, but she was never without a pet or cat that she was foster parenting until she found a forever family worthy of her ‘child’, but it came to my attention earlier this year that Shary had no a/c in her home.

It really made sense, as the cost of installation was beyond her means. It bothered me enough that I decided to contact an Heating and Air Conditioning contractor to inquire about the cost of installing central a/c in her home… Naturally, he could only deliver me a ballpark estimate, as he hadn’t been to Shary’s house to determine what her boiler and ductwork consisted of, however the quote that he gave me seemed sufficient. One can argue that living in the south, you will never experience real changing of seasons.

Some say that the climate in the south is miserable.

The northern states experience a winter like I cannot imagine. Snow days, overcast skies for weeks and freeze warnings do not sound like fun to me at all. I enjoy the humidity and sunshine. When it is cold, the only thing I can do to be comfortable is to warm up next to a wood burning fire. In the south, not all homes are equipped with central heat or furnaces. Many homes rely on electric heaters or fireplaces to heat their homes. My home does not have central heating, therefore, when it gets cold enough, we break out the electric heaters. During the summer months, storing the heaters can be a pain. With such limited space, the heaters usually get other things piled on top of them and it can be a pain getting them out when it is time. The heaters can also be annoying because they are either too hot or not warm enough. I do not like sleeping with an electric heater on because I have heard too many stories about house fires. It is terrifying to think that an electric heater could kill someone. One thing that I am sure of is that when it comes down to where I would choose to live, I always choose the southern states. Humidity and sunshine are my favorite things!

My new air conditioning unit was working fine up until last weekend.

I had gone to the beach with some friends during the day, and returned to a hot, stuffy house.

I started to wonder if my boyfriend had turned the temperature up because he had come down with a cold. When I asked him about it, he said that he had noticed it getting a little warmer inside, but still could hear the fan running so did not think much of it. As the night went on, the house grew warmer and warmer. When I checked the thermostat, it read 81 degrees. It was the middle of the summer and I knew something was not right. Like I said, the fan was still running so we thought what we heard was the air conditioner. The next day, I called the local HVAC company to send someone out to take a look. What they found was that the compressor was out and the fan was still running. We ended up needing to replace the compressor that day. At first, we considered holding off but then thought about how it was only going to get hotter as the summer progressed. Reluctantly, we agreed to replace the compressor that same day. We had plans to go out for dinner, but we decided to order a pizza and enjoy our new air conditioning that evening. It ended up being a good choice, because the following week was one of the hottest weeks of the year. We were happy to have out AC up and functioning correctly.

My mom and dad are constantly traveling when they have time off of work.

They will soon be retired, and I know that they will want to continue to travel.

One thing they have mentioned is that they will come home from a long trip and have to wait for the house to cool down after being set to a higher temperature for a long period of time. When you get home from traveling, there is nothing better than being comfortable in your own home. I decided to look into getting them a smart thermostat for their house this year for Christmas. One time, my parents were in another country for 3 weeks. They were rushing to get to the airport on time and totally forgot to turn the air conditioning up to a higher temperature while they were out of town. I had to drive an hour to their house to turn the air conditioning up when they realized what they had done. I got to thinking about it, and this could have been easily avoided if they had a smart thermostat where they could have done it from the airport on their smartphone. That was the day I decided to look into this. I found out that it’s not really that expensive to have a smart thermostat installed. Most of the devices are able to be programmed in about an hour. My parents are very happy with their smart thermostat. My dad even admits to using his phone to adjust the air conditioning from his bed.
