It’s been a long time that I’ve lived any way that I wanted to live.

I hate that the pandemic had to happen.

But that’s just exactly what happened. Even if you weren’t personally dealt a blow from a Covid infection, it was a rough time. I know that initially, I thought that working from home would be just the worst. I was one hundred percent wrong about that. For sure, the first month or so of working inside the central air conditioning of my house was tough. I couldn’t seem to find a good rhythm, the right work space or get the hang of the online meetings. But the more I pushed through to the Summer, the better I was at working outside of the commercial HVAC of the office. That first Summer of the pandemic was the first time I realized that I had to move my schedule around the amount of air conditioning I was getting. Of course, both my husband and I had to take pay cuts to keep our jobs. So limiting the air conditioning costs was important. That’s what we did by keeping the thermostat around 80 degrees during the peak heating hours of the day. Today, I’m going into my fourth Summer working remotely and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to the office. I go to important meetings but that’s it. So now, I have to change my daily schedule so I can avoid my office when it’s so warm in our house. So I get up well before dawn and work until lunch. Then, I get out of the house during the worst of the heat to do errands.

Normally, I’ve thought of protecting my HVAC equipment as making sure that it got the HVAC maintenance that it needed. This was the only protection that I had in mind. And for sure, I have been very consistent when it comes to protecting my HVAC unit with heating maintenance in the Fall. Then, I have the air conditioning tune up done in late March to be sure that the heat pump is ready to go for our steaming Summer heat. But now, I’m actually physically protecting my HVAC equipment from people who want to destroy it. I guess it’s one thing to steal something. I hate that people feel like they have to steal or are compelled to steal. But what’s happening with the HVAC equipment in a recent burglary trend is something altogether different indeed. Now we’re talking about an HVAC unit being completely ripped apart and eviscerated for copper. We’re talking about thousands of dollars worth of HVAC equipment being completely ruined for handfuls of copper fittings. But those copper fittings are easily turned into cash at places that buy scrap metal. So now, protecting the HVAC unit has a whole new meaning to it for me. That’s because I’m protecting the HVAC equipment alongside my house with a steel cage that fits over the HVAC cabinet. And then, I can lock that cage down to the concrete pad underneath. This is what it takes now for me to protect the heating and cooling equipment. It might be time to look for a better neighborhood.

I just was completely ignorant when it came to the topic of indoor air quality.

Having been raised and lived all my life inside a big city, pollution was certainly something I dealt with on a daily basis.

Yet, living in an apartment building with radiant heating and window air conditioning, I really didn’t know anything about indoor air quality. This is yet another thing I’m learning. And this particular learning curve comes as a first time homeowner. There is just a lot to learn for sure. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve ever lived inside central air conditioning. So there was a lot to learn there. But the local HVAC professionals have been awesome about all of that. We had to replace the HVAC equipment when we first bought this house. So I got lots of tips about living with and in central air conditioning. In fact, that’s where the topic of indoor air quality was first broached. I learned that just because we now live in a rural area basically free of air pollution, we aren’t free of indoor air contaminants. From pet dander, pollen and even the chemicals that leach from the carpet and furniture, our respiratory system is under attack. And to promote good health and immune response, we needed to make some changes. We now have a HEPA filter which traps and removes more than 99 percent of all indoor contaminants. It’s made a world of difference. But soon, we’re going for a whole home air purification system that will provide the cleanest and best indoor air quality possible.

There is no doubt that I was going to go wherever my wife wanted to go when it came to retirement.

There is no way I have a corner office and my own thermostat inside that office without my wife. Not only did she support me all those years. But she did all the heavy lifting when it came to taking care of the kids. We actually upgraded the HVAC equipment in the family home not too long ago and sold it. It was too much house and with the kids gone, it felt so cavernous and empty. Selling the house provided a big payday that we have since stashed away. But we’re making a dent in that bag of money as we are for sure moving to my wife’s home region. She’s a southern girl and has desperately missed living in her home area. It’s crazy that with the different stops in my career, there never was a stop in the south much less way down south where she’s from. So I’m excited to be moving with her to this region. Not only is it so beautiful there but the weather is perfect during the Winter. Finally, I’ll be able to unload the gas furnace for heating in the Winter. We’ll have a heat pump in our new place. But even then, my wife said we probably won’t ever use it because we’re now so accustomed to such bitter cold, snow and ice from living so far north. I’m eager to enjoy the Winter. But I’m going to get a trial by fire as we are moving in August. And that’s about the toughest of the Summer temperatures for sure. So we’ll see just what our new heat pump is actually made of then.

So it all started with the fact that we couldn’t have children I think.

Actually, I don’t think my wife and I have ever really broken down the full reason for all these animals.

But I think the fact that we couldn’t be human parents made being parents to fur babies all the more appealing. Plus, we were lucky to inherit a home with central air conditioning, three bedrooms, a big kitchen and 29 acres. Talk about the sort of gift that keeps on giving.
