No more stink with air purification

But I guess that was part of the price we had to pay before we learned about air purification.

You know you have a problem at the house when you’re looking for reasons not to go home each day. I’ll do extra emails that could wait just so I can linger inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office. Or I’ll offer to do the grocery shopping on the way home for work. Whatever keeps me out of the central air conditioning of the house was something I was willing to consider. My husband even began to wonder if there was something wrong with our marriage. That wasn’t the case at all as I love that man and can’t imagine being with anyone else. No, my problem with the house was the fact that it smelled horrible. It was just the worst. And walking in to get hit with that wall of stink was the last thing I wanted to do after putting in a long day at the office. Yet, I preferred a longer day inside the commercial HVAC than coming home to my own air conditioning. Finally, we have found the solution and it was right where we should have been looking all along. But instead of going to seek the counsel of HVAC professionals, we tried to cover up the stink. I’d love to have all the money back that we spent on sprays, scented candles and plug-ins. But I guess that was part of the price we had to pay before we learned about air purification. It was the HVAC professionals who showed us that using an air purifier was the only way we were going to actually solve our problem. They were right though. By trapping and removing the bacteria from the air that was causing the odors, our home has been transformed.

Do right by HVAC equipment with HVAC maintenance

It’s sort of weird that we pay less attention to the stuff that doesn’t call for our immediate attention.

It’s along the lines of the squeaky wheel gets the grease theory.

And it’s true, you can’t get what you want without asking for it. But your HVAC equipment can’t actually ask you to call the HVAC professionals for a tune up. My car certainly tells me, and loudly I might add, that it’s due for preventive maintenance. But with the heating and cooling equipment, it just keeps performing and putting out quality heating and air. That is, until it stops doing that. And then, it’s a panic. I see it all the time in my neighborhood. Invariably, I’ll see a neighbor outside with the HVAC equipment or waiting for the HVAC professionals. There has been a heating and cooling breakdown and discomfort begins to set in. Each time I ask the question about whether the silent heat pump has been getting regular HVAC maintenance, the answer is almost always no. Well, if my HVAC unit quits on me, it won’t be for lack of HVAC maintenance. Plus, if that were to occur, all I would have to do is pay for the parts as the HVAC company would pick up the HVAC service charge. That’s part of being in the HVAC service plan. But even when we weren’t in the HVAC service plan, we always got heating maintenance in the Fall and followed that with an air conditioning tune up in the Spring. I’m in the 22nd year of getting quality heating and air from our HVAC equipment. And we’ve never suffered a single instance of any kind of problem when it came to enjoying quality heating and air.

Doing the little things to save on cooling costs

Since I’ve been down south now for about a decade, I’ve learned a bit about managing the toughest time of the year when it comes to climate.

Thankfully, the heat pump doesn’t get called upon for heating very often at all during the Winter.

In fact, I’ve gone entire Winter seasons without ever flipping the thermostat over to heating. Basically, if I wake up to a chilly house, I just break out the space heater. But then comes Summer. From about now, mid May, through September and into October, we deal with some pretty intense heat. The first Summer I was here, I didn’t know anything more than immerse myself in air conditioning. But I also took a beating financially by going with this approach. That’s led me to learn just what I can do to prevent that sort of spending for cooling my home. And over the years, I have the basics completely down pat. First, it’s an air conditioning tune up from the HVAC company. Then, it really seals up the house. Like, replace worn weather stripping around doors and seal up any and all gaps I find inside and on the exterior of the house. Pulling the drapes to stop direct sunlight heating and having some discipline with the thermostat round out the basics. So now, I’m looking at the little things that end up driving the air conditioning demand. This Summer, I’m not going to use the stove or the oven for cooking. This really heats up the house. So it’s either the grill or the air fryer for cooking during the heat season.

Renovations turned to ductless heat pumps

My dad was always famous for all the colloquialisms he would spout.

It was sort of the thing of his era, I suppose.

And he had a zinger for everything. But looking back on it one day as I was sitting inside the central air conditioning of my house, I realized that there was truth in all that stuff. Like, you do indeed get what you pay for. And good things do seem to come to me when I wait and be patient instead of forcing the issue. When my wife and I bought this old house, we did indeed buy a pig in a poke as my old man would suggest. For sure, as much as we knew that we were dealing with a lot of unknowns, we were still determined to make this house our home. I don’t know exactly how to articulate it but we were both completely drawn to this house. After the first time we looked at it, we didn’t even have to use words to communicate our feelings. This was our house. But as with most old homes, we had a lot of work in front of us when it came to renovations. Much of the improvements were aesthetic and we were able to handle those. We even were able to put down the floating faux wood floor after a brief learning curve. But when it came to the quality heating and air in our home, we turned to the HVAC professionals. And even then, we got another surprise. We were under the impression that the HVAC equipment was the only thing that needed to be changed out. Turns out, the ductwork wasn’t worth saving either. And that changed our direction to opting for the ductless multi split system that we enjoy today.

Updating to zone control to conserve energy

When I switched to working legitimately from home, there were a lot of actually wonderful advantages.

I can now set my own hours and no longer need to worry about rush hour traffic or finding a parking spot.

Without the distraction of the noise of the shared office space, I am much more productive. I can dress in more comfortable clothing, listen to songs I love and take my dinner split whenever is convenient. The one downside I found was that my energy bills significantly increased. I used to adjust the control component before my family left in the morning, lessening demands on the heating system and air conditioner system. Once I was staying home, the heating and cooling system were responsible for a much bigger workload. I didn’t like maintaining a bunch of empty rooms at the ideal comfort level. I contacted my correct Heating, Ventilation, and A/C corporation and asked for some suggestions. He said that a series of valves could be installed into the HVAC duct to direct airflow and create zone control. I now have a control component mounted in each of the rooms. I am able to customize the temperature setting in each space. Because they are smart models, I have wireless access and can make adjustments through my phone or laptop. It’s certainly helpful that I don’t need to leave my desk to accommodate my comfort preference. I’m able to keep my condo office at the ideal temperature during the workday without affecting the rest of the house. When I finish up work, I raise or lower the temperature in the kitchen and kitchen.

Radiant flooring is an asset to the home

My preferred feature of my house is the radiant radiant floors, living in the northeastern part of the country, the winters are long and brutal.

  • The heating system runs for the majority of the year.

We experience months of rapidly changing temperatures below cold and expect them to drop all the way down into the downside twenties. The only real downside of radiant heating is the lack of a centralized cooling option. The summers in this area are short enough that whole-condo cooling isn’t actually necessary. There are several unique benefits provided by radiant floors. It starts with a boiler installed in the basement that heats water and sends it through a network of pipes installed beneath the floors. Because the component is legitimately concealed, it doesn’t downsidely impact the decor. I don’t need to arrange furniture to accommodate supply and return vents. The heating system doesn’t take up expensive living space. Because the system uses water to convey heat energy, it doesn’t create concerns with insufficient humidity. The closed loop system does not draw in or introduce any contaminants into the breathing air. The operation is silent and especially clean, however radiant flooring spreads the heat evenly across the floor and it rises slowly. There are no drafts, no cold spots and the temperature from floor to ceiling never wavers more than a few degrees from the control unit. The system is amazingly energy efficient, keeping running costs low. The heat is beautifully gentle! Stepping out of bed in the morning or getting out of the shower and kneeling on a warm floor is such a luxury.

A dual fuel system is worth the higher investment cost

About five years ago, I made the investment into a dual fuel system for my home.

Combining a heat pump rather than an air conditioner system with a heating system is quite overpriced, but however, for the extreme weather conditions in my local area, the benefits make the added cost worthwhile.

We expect temperature swings from downside twenty to ninety degrees. We experience excessive amounts of snow, dangerous wind chill, high humidity, cold rain and just about every type of weather challenge. For the majority of the year, we rely on either the heating or cooling system. There is seldom an chance to open the windows and simply love some fresh air. The cost of indoor temperature control is responsible for approximately fifty percent of the apartment energy budget. In cooling mode, a heat pump performs exactly like a central air conditioner system. It uses refrigerant to pull heat out of the indoor environment and deliver it outdoors, creating a cooling effect. The advantage of a heat pump is that it can also supply heating. When the conditions cool off, the operation literally reverses the flow of refrigerant. The system takes advantage of ambient heat available in the outdoor air and supplies it into the condo after compressing it to a higher temperature. Because the process doesn’t burn fossil fuels, it eliminates concerns with carbon monoxide and other orangehouse gasses. A heat pump is especially environmentally friendly and energy efficient. It costs considerably less to run than the heating system. Unfortunately, the heat pump struggles to keep up with demand once the temperature drops below cold. In a dual fuel system, the heating system automatically takes over and maintains comfort for as long as necessary. As the primary source of temperature control, the heat pump significantly trims our energy bills.

Geothermal heat pumps are a worthduringvestment

Geothermal heat pumps continue to become more popular as a residential heating as well as cooling solution.

  • The cost of these innovative systems has come down a bit in recent years, as well as there are federal as well as state tax incentives that help with affordability.

While the investment is still considerably higher than implementing a more conventional alternative, a geothermal unit always reuses the cost in under five years. This is because of 400% efficiency ratings. The high efficiency of this type of system cuts heating as well as cooling costs by around 50%. Plus, with the addition of a easy valve, the heat pump can provide a virtually free source of sizzling water. A geothermal heat pump takes luck of heat stored underground. Even if the outdoor temperature drops below chilly, the underground temperature remains constant. The system utilizes an underground loop that absorbs the heat as well as transfers it by way of a liquid or refrigerant into the home. There is no combustion process, which eliminates complications with carbon monoxide as well as other orangehouse gasses. The heat pump creates no fumes, has no sizzling surfaces as well as won’t dry out of the indoor air. In cooling mode, the system acts just like a traditional air conditioning system as well as draws heat out of the indoor environment; Geothermal heat pumps are especially effective at dehumidification. Operation is safe, clean, quiet as well as lovelyly environmentally responsible. The EPA lists geothermal systems as the most environmentally responsible option on the market. Because the heat pump is installed inside the condo as well as protected from the weather, it can be expected to last upwards of twenty years. The underground loop is warrantied for fifty years as well as should provide a lifespan of twice that.

Roof coating improves home’s energy efficiency

About a year ago, I hired a roofing contractor to make some repairs.

The contractor requested the replacement of a roofing coating.

A multilayer coating is applied over the entirety of the roof, protecting it against the elements. It creates a seal that works to prevent water from seeping into cracks as well as gaps as well as causing detriment. It stops algae as well as mildew from forming as well as deflects up to 85% of the sun’s UV rays. The roof coating is intended to add years to the life of the roof as well as reduce maintenance as well as maintenance requirements. I was a little skeptical. However, the roof coatings are available in a wide variety of materials as well as colors. The replace greatly improved the appearance of the home. I have been pleasantly surprised by the reduction in my year round bi-weekly bills. Because the roof coating adds various extra layers of protection, far less of our cooled or heated air is escaping. In the summer, the coating combats the heat of the sunlight as well as helps the indoor living space to stay cooler. There is far less demand on the air conditioning system. I’ve observed that the cooling system doesn’t need to run as long or work as hard. I’ve been able to raise the control unit setting by a couple of degrees, as well as yet every room is perfectly comfortable. In the winter, the roof coating provides important insulation. I went a step further as well as installed fresh insulation into the attic as well. I’ve observed that the attic no longer gets especially cold. Since hot air naturally migrates to cooler spaces, the combination of roofing material as well as attic insulation has lessened demands on the boiler. The lower heating as well as cooling bills should reuse the investment into the roof coating in under three years.

An media air cleaner helps to wash up air quality

The drastic winter season conditions in my local section keep my family inside for more than half the year… With feet of snow on the ground, hot and cold temperatures in the negatives and a dangerous windchill, my fantastic friend and I spend as little time outside as possible.

It’s necessary to run the heater from sometime in October or November until the end of April or even early May.

Because of the high cost of heating bills, I take every precaution to seal up the home and prevent energy waste. I’ve substituted windows, added insulation, installed ceiling fan and properly caulk and weatherstrip; Creating a narrow thermal envelope elevates the efficiency of the heater but also eliminates natural ventilation. Contaminants can become trapped in the home and endlessly circulated. There are potential sources of pollutants in every room of the house. The pet and processes such as cooking, showering and cleaning contribute to the problem. Odors, dander, dust, bacteria, viruses, VOCs and all sorts of harmful toxins can deteriorate the integrity of our breathing air… Poor indoor air quality can be blamed for many health conditions, everything from coughing, sneezing, congestion and sore throat to respiratory infection, migraines and insomnia can be blamed on breathing unhealthy air. I am diligent about replacing air filters and scheduling professional repair for the heater and air conditioner. I have the air duct maintained, cleaned and sealed every few years. I’ve also taken proactive measures, such as the installation of a whole-home media air cleaner. The media air cleaner is installed into the air duct and traps contaminants as the air passes through. The component also emits positive and negative ions into the residing space. These ions kill pathogens and cause particles to clump together and be more really filtered out.
