One of the reasons why I decided to become an HVAC technician is due to the good salary and benefits. HVAC technicians earn an average starting salary around $50,000 each year. HVAC service technicians can work in jobs that have benefits like medical, dental, and a retirement program. There are a lot of reasons for someone to become an HVAC technician. The best reason is the money and career stability. I can literally move anywhere that I want and find a job working in the heating or AC repair industry. The only thing that really holds me back is the fact that I am a woman. A lot of men work in the HVAC industry and there aren’t a lot of women technicians or supervisors. It’s hard to get someone to take me seriously and half of the time the customer questions my abilities. If there is a man in the house, they want to know why a man was not sent out to do the work. If I tell someone that they need the HVAC system replaced, they are 75% more likely to get a second opinion because I am a woman. I’ve had to deal with a lot of sexism in the industry, but I’m thankful to finally be out on my own so I don’t have to worry about these problems anymore. I started a commercial and residential heating and AC repair business and I focus on the small community where I live. I would rather be a large fish in a small pond than a small fish in a very large pond infested with sharks.
