Updating to zone control to conserve energy

When I switched to working entirely from home, there were a lot of really great advantages.

I can now set my own hours and no longer need to worry about rush hour traffic or finding a parking spot.

Without the distraction of the noise of the shared office space, I am much more productive. I can dress in more comfortable clothing, listen to music I enjoy and take my lunch break whenever is convenient. The one drawback I found was that my energy bills significantly increased. I used to adjust the thermostat before my family left in the morning, lessening demands on the furnace and air conditioner. Once I was staying home, the heating and cooling system were responsible for a much bigger workload. I didn’t like maintaining a bunch of empty rooms at the ideal comfort level. I contacted my regular HVAC contractor and asked for some suggestions. He said that a series of valves could be installed into the ductwork to direct airflow and create zone control. I now have a thermostat mounted in each of the rooms. I am able to customize the temperature setting in each space. Because they are smart models, I have wifi access and can make adjustments through my phone or laptop. It’s very helpful that I don’t need to leave my desk to accommodate my comfort preference. I’m able to keep my home office at the ideal temperature during the workday without affecting the rest of the house. When I finish up work, I raise or lower the temperature in the kitchen and living room.

Roof coating improves home’s energy efficiency

I’ve noticed that the attic no longer gets especially chilly

About a year ago, I hired a roofing contractor to make some repairs. The contractor suggested the installation of a roofing coating. A multilayer coating is applied over the entirety of the roof, protecting it against the elements. It creates a seal that works to prevent water from seeping into cracks and gaps and causing damage. It stops algae and mildew from forming and deflects up to 85% of the sun’s UV rays. The roof coating is intended to add years to the life of the roof and reduce repair and maintenance requirements. I was a little skeptical. However, the roof coatings are available in a wide variety of materials and colors. The upgrade greatly improved the appearance of the home. I have been pleasantly surprised by the reduction in my year round energy bills. Because the roof coating adds several extra layers of protection, far less of our cooled or heated air is escaping. In the summer, the coating combats the heat of the sun and helps the indoor living space to stay cooler. There is far less demand on the air conditioner. I’ve noticed that the cooling system doesn’t need to run as long or work as hard. I’ve been able to raise the thermostat setting by a couple of degrees, and yet every room is perfectly comfortable. In the winter, the roof coating provides important insulation. I went a step further and installed fresh insulation into the attic as well. I’ve noticed that the attic no longer gets especially chilly. Since warm air naturally migrates to cooler spaces, the combination of roofing material and attic insulation has lessened demands on the furnace. The lower heating and cooling bills should recover the investment into the roof coating in under three years.

Radiant flooring is an asset to the home

My favorite feature of my house is the radiant heated floors.

Living in the northeastern part of the country, the winters are long and brutal.

The heating system runs for the majority of the year. We experience months of temperatures below freezing and expect them to drop all the way down into the negative twenties. The only real drawback of radiant heating is the lack of a centralized cooling option. The summers in this area are short enough that whole-home cooling isn’t really necessary. There are numerous unique benefits provided by heated floors. It starts with a boiler installed in the basement that heats water and sends it through a network of pipes installed beneath the floors. Because the equipment is entirely concealed, it doesn’t negatively impact the decor. I don’t need to arrange furniture to accommodate supply and return vents. The heating system doesn’t take up valuable living space. Because the system uses water to convey heat energy, it doesn’t create problems with insufficient humidity. The closed loop system doesn’t draw in or introduce any contaminants into the breathing air. The operation is silent and especially clean. Radiant flooring spreads the heat evenly across the floor and it rises slowly. There are no drafts, no cold spots and the temperature from floor to ceiling never wavers more than a few degrees from the thermostat. The system is amazingly energy efficient, keeping running costs low. The heat is wonderfully gentle. Stepping out of bed in the morning or getting out of the shower and standing on a warm floor is such a luxury.

A dual fuel system is worth the higher investment cost

About five years ago, I made the investment into a dual fuel system for my home. Combining a heat pump rather than an air conditioner with a furnace is quite expensive. However, for the extreme weather conditions in my local area, the benefits make the added cost worthwhile. We expect temperature fluctuations from negative twenty to ninety degrees. We experience excessive amounts of snow, dangerous wind chill, high humidity, freezing rain and just about every type of weather challenge. For the majority of the year, we rely on either the heating or cooling system. There is seldom an opportunity to open the windows and simply enjoy some fresh air. The cost of indoor temperature control is responsible for approximately fifty percent of the household energy budget. In cooling mode, a heat pump performs exactly like a central air conditioner. It uses refrigerant to pull heat out of the indoor environment and deliver it outdoors, creating a cooling effect. The advantage of a heat pump is that it can also provide heating. When the conditions cool off, the operation literally reverses the flow of refrigerant. The system takes advantage of ambient heat available in the outdoor air and supplies it into the home after compressing it to a higher temperature. Because the process doesn’t burn fossil fuels, it eliminates concerns with carbon monoxide and other greenhouse gasses. A heat pump is especially environmentally friendly and energy efficient. It costs considerably less to run than the furnace. Unfortunately, the heat pump struggles to keep up with demand once the temperature drops below freezing. In a dual fuel system, the furnace automatically takes over and maintains comfort for as long as necessary. As the primary source of temperature control, the heat pump significantly trims our utility bills.

Improving comfort with a ductless heat pump

I love the unique charm of my older home.

It features the original hardwood floors, moldings, doors and banisters. The big windows allow in a great deal of sunlight and offer a lovely view but also leak air. The high ceilings trap heat and cause temperature stratification. The ductwork was designed before multiple renovations were completed. The layout of the supply and return vents doesn’t accommodate the current floorplan properly. For several years, we struggled with the upstairs bedrooms feeling overheated and sticky and the living room feeling chilly. With a single thermostat, there was no way to target specific rooms. I looked into updating to zone control, but the ductwork couldn’t support it. There was no way my husband and I were willing to destroy the architectural integrity of our home by tearing down walls and ceilings and installing a whole new duct system. I finally got tired of using window air conditioners, box fans and portable electric heaters to compensate. I did some research and discovered ductless heat pumps. This provided the ideal solution. A ductless system consists of an outdoor compressor that links by way of a slender conduit to multiple indoor air handlers. The installation required little more than a three-inch hole in an exterior wall and created no mess or disruption. The air handlers are lightweight, compact and mounted up high on the wall, They operate quietly and provide both heating and cooling. Because each air handler features an independent thermostat, we’re able to customize the temperature in each individual room. The ductless system allows zone control, provides energy efficient performance and has significantly improved the comfort of the home.

quality heating and cooling

An air purifier helps to clean up air quality

The severe winter conditions in my local area keep my family inside for more than half the year.

With feet of snow on the ground, temperatures in the negatives and a dangerous windchill, we spend as little time outside as possible.

It’s necessary to run the furnace from sometime in October or November until the end of April or even early May. Because of the high cost of heating bills, I take every precaution to seal up the house and prevent energy waste. I’ve replaced windows, added insulation, installed ceiling fan and regularly caulk and weatherstrip. Creating a tight thermal envelope elevates the efficiency of the furnace but also eliminates natural ventilation. Contaminants can become trapped in the house and endlessly circulated. There are potential sources of pollutants in every room of the house. The dog as well as processes such as cooking, showering and cleaning contribute to the problem. Odors, dander, dust, bacteria, viruses, VOCs and all sorts of harmful toxins can deteriorate the integrity of our breathing air. Poor indoor air quality can be blamed for numerous health conditions. Everything from coughing, sneezing, congestion and sore throat to respiratory infection, migraines and insomnia can be blamed on breathing unhealthy air. I am diligent about replacing air filters and scheduling professional maintenance for the furnace and air conditioner. I have the ductwork tested, cleaned and sealed every few years. I’ve also taken proactive measures, such as the installation of a whole-home air purifier. The air purifier is installed into the ductwork and traps contaminants as the air passes through. The device also emits positive and negative ions into the living space. These ions kill pathogens and cause particles to clump together and be more easily filtered out.

Window air conditioners serve my purposes

I am totally happy with window air conditioners. I have no need to make a much bigger investment into a central cooling system. I live in the northern area of the country, where the winter weather is the priority. My house is equipped with a boiler heating system that is powerful enough to handle outside temperatures down to negative twenty-five degrees. I expect to raise the thermostat by the end of September and rely on the boiler for approximately eight months. It seems to take forever for the snow to finally melt and the robins to show up. I watch for the first signs of daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. I’m always very eager to shut off the heating system, open the windows and introduce some fresh air into the home. I have no desire to close the windows a month later, turn down the thermostat and start paying an expensive electric bill. During the spring, summer and fall, I spend every possible moment outside. I like to go for runs, hikes and bike rides. I kayak, swim and paddleboard. I enjoy working in my gardens, lying in the sun with a book and barbecuing. The only time the overheated and sticky conditions of the house are a problem are at night. It would be impossible to get a good night’s sleep without some type of cooling option. The boiler doesn’t allow for central air conditioning. I don’t mind because I’ve purchased a couple of window air conditioners. I picked them up at a local home improvement store for a couple of hundred dollars. They are lightweight, compact and easy to install into the window.

Furnace repair caused by lack of maintenance

Winter arrived especially early this year.

One day, the temperature was in the low sixties and the next, it plummeted below freezing.

We went from blue skies and sunshine to clouds and endless snowfall. I had not yet gotten around to scheduling maintenance for the furnace when it was necessary to raise the thermostat setting. I noticed that the heating system made some odd noises and the odor of burning hair and dust spewed from the vents. I should have immediately called a local HVAC contractor and scheduled service. Unfortunately, I was way too busy trying to prepare the house for the unexpected arrival of winter conditions. I needed to put away the barbecue, patio furniture, pool pump and lawn mower. I started hauling my family’s winter coats, boots and accessories down from the attic, located the snow shovels and ice scrapers and purchased rock salt. I called to schedule a snow plowing service for the driveway. I went around and made sure all of the windows were shut properly and added a bit of caulk here and there. I ignored all of the warning signs of furnace failure. The heating system eventually quit at the end of January. Because of an outdoor temperature of twelve degrees, I had no choice but to pay extra for emergency repairs on a weekend. The technician who inspected the furnace told me that the cause of the malfunction was a significant buildup of dust on the inner workings. The problem could have been prevented with a tune-up in the fall. I was lucky that the furnace overheating didn’t crack the heat exchanger and necessitate a full system replacement.

Upgrading the heating system

I recently started working at a shop downtown, and I like it. Though the workload is much, and the job can be demanding, I still like working there. I’m also in a new relationship. Recently, I decided to have my electric heat pump updated. It had been giving trouble for the past months, so I have had heating professionals at my property every week. I was living in a friend’s house. Since she had gone back to work, I babysat for her baby during her shift, which I loved. Which was several hours long. Though I had kept up with the regular heating maintenance, the furnace was outdated and about done. I finally booked an appointment with the heating contractor to remove the system. Some time back, the HVAC repairman had suggested replacing it with a hybrid heater, but I took too long to make up my mind. The contractor was too busy for the weekend when I was available. The main reason I moved to my friend’s place was that the entire property was being renovated. Now it was the tech’s turn to install the hydronic heater, and then the contractor would continue with the renovation. I called the heating dealership for service on the other side of my friend’s home, for routine servicing. The work at my home took a month, by which time my friend was working longer hours.. When I left, her sibling came to help her with the baby.

A malfunction caused a work stoppage

One day I found the workers in the packaging section of our company in the lobby.

I discovered the company’s new heating unit was not working.

Even with all machines working, it could get cold in the winter without a heater. I called the heating contractor and explained the issue the best I could. The building where the heat pump was included a furnace to replace a hybrid heater. I was present during the furnace/heater upgrade. The heating dealership had suggested the unit, and we have appreciated it so far. A certified expert performed the service. An hour later, I saw the HVAC contractor truck as well as let out a sigh of relief. The professional ran tests on the HVAC product and proceeded with a boiler repair. After some time, the professional finished the repair, as well as we could finally return to work. Our service team also needed to learn more about the furnace; Later, I passed by a friend’s place as well as found the same tech carrying HVAC service. She looked so adorable in her Christmas jacket, barefoot as well as pregnant. It also helped that they had a hydronic heater in their home. I appreciated going to their property for dinner or whenever they invited me because it felt like I was with my family, which was far away. That day she had made Kheer just for me because she knew I appreciated it. I gave her a cheesecake I had been making, which she loved.

Terrific service from a heating dealership

I have dealt with several heating contractors, and learned they basically have almost the same strategies.

I have also met some particularly talented HVAC professionals who went above and beyond to give quality heating service.

When I was living with my neighbor, Kara, the furnace, at one point, just stopped working. Kara, who knew more about heaters, had not noticed any signs or symptoms of an issue with the heat pump. The system shut down when my buddy and I hosted some of our friends for supper, but our worst fear was being told to purchase another HVAC system. It was a particularly embarrassing experience. I called the heating dealership as well as booked an appointment for a contractor to perform the work. One of us had to be in the property while the experts were working on the furnace/heater upgrade. I opted to labor remotely that afternoon as I ran tests on the heating systems. The techs were particularly efficient, as well as they explained the steps to me. They showed me the components of what I discovered was a hybrid heater. The entire repair process took more time than they had anticipated. Finally, my buddy and I had help with indoor comfort. One of them advocated that my buddy and I get a smart control unit that would help us save energy as well as make our unit more efficient. After the repair workers were done with the work, they cleaned their workspace as well as tidied it up. They later shared some critical as well as helpful homeowner solutions directions. Even with the several companies I worked with, this was the first that gave terrific after-sale services. I have stuck with this business. I schedule our annual HVAC service with them. I even recommended them to a neighbor who wanted her property fitted with a hydronic heater as well as another for boiler repair.

When a modern heater upgrade is the only way to go

The heater upgrade was finished before opening time.

My neighbor owned a massage parlor, however before, she had worked there as a masseuse for multiple years. When the owner retired, she sold the contractor to my friend, Clara. She liked her contractor and had invested a lot to make the store’s interior as welcoming as possible. The interior needed to make the buyers feel at property as well as comfortable. The indoor HVAC system at the business had started acting up. The temperature kept fluctuating and doing little to help with indoor comfort. The HVAC was making unstandard noises when left on for a while; Even the buyers complained about the low-quality heating at the parlor. Clara was starting to lose buyers, as well as it affected her business. She came into the heating contractor offices seeking assistance. I assigned a heating professional to go over to the parlor as well as run heater service. The HVAC repairman’s verdict on the system was that no boiler repair could recover it. The heat exchanger had a crack as well as was covered in rust, affecting the unit’s optimal function. With the help of an expert, Clara went through multiple HVAC products to choose the best one for her business. She had a hydronic heater supplemented by a furnace in her home. She opted for a ductless heat pump since it would save space because it does not have vents. The heater upgrade was finished before opening time. The repair workers were efficient, and managed to share some of the essential service requirements and taught them more about the heater. They also got a new smart control unit that would make it easier to reset uneven temperatures for the best indoor comfort. With time all the shoppers who had stopped going there slowly came back. It also reminded me to take better care of my hybrid heater, so I called the dealership and signed up for service.
